New LightFair "Lightineraries" Highlight Trade Show and Conference Synergies

LightFair’s dynamic, new “Lightineraries,” combining Conference and Trade Show education with relevant exhibitor products in four categories, will enrich the overall market experience for attendees, May 21-25, 2023, at NYC’s Jacob K. Javits Convention Center.

“LightFair 2023 is going to electrify New York City,” said Dan Darby, show director. “There’s so much to see and do at LightFair 2023 and these new Lightineraries will help attendees find the programs and products of greatest interest.”

Each Lightinerary gives a multi-day roadmap to Conference sessions, Trade Show education and on-floor exhibitors in four different categories: Environmental Enthusiast, Wellness Explorer, Innovative Integrator and Brilliant in Business. With 16 sessions over four days, the Environmental Enthusiast Lightinerary showcases sustainable materials and technology and energy-saving ideas. The 2023 LightFair Conference will offer 120+ accredited sessions with nearly 200 presenters over its five-day run, May 21 – 25. The five interconnected tracks – Art, Business, Process, Science and Technology – will provide a variety of 1-day and 3-hour long courses and tracks with either 90-minute sessions or 60-minute sessions. 2023 NYCxDesign | IALD | Manhattan Lighting Tours 5:45 pm – 8:30 pm, meet at Javits

The Reinvigoration Tour will take attendees through the High Line, an obsolete elevated rail line turned into an iconic public park, and Moynihan Train Hall, a historic USPS facility transformed into a state of the art train station. At the High Line, attendees will learn more about the innovative lighting system

designed by L’Observatoire International, which lights the park’s pathway from below. At Moynihan Train Hall, visitors will hear about the station’s stunning transformation, orchestrated by Domingo Gonzalez Associates, that embraces the ample natural light provided by the vaulted skylights during the day and allows for RGBW light technology by Color Kinetics to steal the show in the evening.

Zhaga is a global consortium creating interface specifications for components of LED luminaires to enable interoperable products supporting sustainable lighting for smart cities and buildings. The DALI Alliance creates standards like D4i for digitally controlling and powering intelligent, IoT-ready luminaires. This seminar shows how the combination of Zhaga and D4i gives the lighting world plug-and-play options. A dual Zhaga-D4i logo indicates sensors, communication nodes and luminaires that are certified as interoperable. Zhaga-D4i creates a multi-vendor ecosystem of smart lighting products. The National Park Service preserves natural lightscapes and works to minimize the effects that outdoor lighting can have not just on dark night skies, but also on wildlife, visitor enjoyment, health and safety, cultural resources and wilderness character.

Karen Treviño, the Natural Sounds and Night Skies Division Chief and will share her experiences, successes and challenges in turning a small, little-known program into a national success and discuss how outdoor lighting can effect national park resources and values.

2023 NYCxDESIGN | IALD | LightFair NYC Lighting Tours 5:45 pm – 8:45 pm, meet at Javits

The New Classics Tour invites attendees to learn more about three buildings that have become contemporary architectural landmarks and the lighting that have come to define their emblematic facades. One Bryant Park’s dynamic spirit is captured through the adaptable lighting by Cline Bettridge Bernstein Lighting Design (CBBLD), making it the first LEED Platinum–certified skyscraper in the United States. One Vanderbilt, a collaboration between lighting designer Tillotson Design Associates and architects Kohn Pedersen Fox Associates, presents impressive lighting display installations using Color Kinetics IntelliHue technology. At 3 Times Square, lighting designer Anita Jorgensen masterfully lit the project in a unique way that allows for the building to hold its own in an area known for its marquees, neon lights, and bright digital screens.

he Community Friendly Lighting Program was developed to promote quality outdoor lighting. In the transition to LED, the basics of lighting design and purpose of lighting have sometimes been lost in the process. This is especially true in the public realm where cost and safety concerns often overshadow the basics of exterior lighting, which are to improve visibility and enable activity after dark. This talk will explore how we can meet these goals while preserving the ambience and character of the community.

NYCxDesign Panel

Select lighting designers from NYC will be chosen to be in conversation with one another and discuss the unique aspects of lighting design in NYC. Topic for discussion will incorporate references to tours, and may also include conversation around local supply chain and fabrication, to New York City’s trajectory and opportunity, and how the designers have made it in NYC. We will choose designers with a variety of backgrounds who utilize a variety of techniques, with the goal of each providing a unique perspective.

State-of-the art, energy-efficient lighting control systems with D4i-enabled luminaires 5:00 pm – 6:00 pm, IES LIVE

D4i brings long-awaited plug and play standardization for smart luminaires. This seminar will start with an overview of the key D4i features and will then explore customer expectations for a modern state-of- the-art lighting control system. The speakers will explain the applications and benefits of each D4i feature in the design of such a system, including sensing, local and group control, asset management, energy optimization and easy maintenance.

The second part of the course will expand on the application of asset management and energy metering features with real-life examples from end users.

Tour Guides: Enrique Garcia-Carrera, Paul Marantz, and Miyoung Song (Lighting Designers)

A unique partnership between the Diller-von Furstenberg Family Foundation and Hudson River Park Trust, Little Island was born from the opportunity to envision a solution for the repair and renovation of Pier 54 and reimagine an entirely new type of public space for New York City, one that would create an immersive experience with nature and art. Fisher Marantz Stone created the lighting design for this innovative park.

Join lighting designers Enrique Garcia-Carrera, Paul Marantz, and Miyoung Song as they walk through their vision for Little Island. In the evening, visitors first notice the festively illuminated park from a distance while strolling along the Hudson River Park Esplanade, which runs from Chambers to West 59th Street. The historic Cunard-White Star Line Arch, newly restored and sparkling with light, acts as an entry beacon leading to the luminous bridge and the uplit concrete pots supporting the park. Once on-site, visitors can explore the highlighted paths, ramps, and stairs, take a show in the Amphitheater, or marvel at the unparalleled views of New York City, the Hudson River, and New Jersey.
